Medicare rebates are available for psychological treatment by registered psychologists under the Australian Government's Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative.

This scheme provides considerable assistance to people living with mental heath problems, allowing them greater access to psychologists and providing more affordable mental healthcare. The Medicare Rebate has been available for psychological services since November 1st  2006. To be eligible for this rebate your GP must first assess that you meet the eligibility requirements to receive psychological services and, with your agreement, must  also complete an assessment and develop a plan for the management of your condition.

The issues that are eligible under this scheme involve those that are clinically diagnosable and significantly impact on a person's emotions, thoughts, social skills and decision-making.

This includes clients with: Psychotic disorders; Schizophrenia; Bipolar disorders; Phobic disorders; Anxiety disorders; Adjustment disorders; Depression; Sexual disorders; Conduct disorder; Bereavement disorders; Post traumatic stress disorder; Eating disorder; Panic disorder; Alcohol use disorders; Drug use disorders; Sleep problems; Attention deficit disorder; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder; Co-occurring anxiety and depression.

The type of referral written by your GP is called a ‘Mental Health Care Plan’ (Item No. 2710) and this will be registered by your GP with Medicare in Canberra. The initial referral can be for up to 6 consultations. Prior to the end of the 6th session I would contact your GP advising of your progress. If necessary another 4 consultations (item No. 2712) can be sought within the Mental Health Care Plan. Currently the rebate from Medicare for consultations with Veronica is  $84.80 per consultation. Over ten consultations this amounts to $848.00 rebated back to you.
